Clay Pot Braised Pork Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon black tea powder
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1.5 lbs pork belly or shoulder, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 1 cup beef broth or chicken broth
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup oyster sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup water chestnuts, sliced (optional)
- 1/2 cup shiitake mushrooms, sliced (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Black Tea Marinade:
- In a small bowl, mix the black tea powder with the boiling water. Allow the tea to steep for 3-4 minutes, then strain and let it cool. This mixture will be used to marinate the pork.
Marinate the Pork:
- Place the pork cubes in a shallow dish and pour the cooled black tea marinade over them. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours.
Prepare the Clay Pot:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If using a traditional clay pot, preheat it in the oven while the pork is marinating to ensure even heating.
Sauté the Aromatics:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a preheated clay pot or a heavy-bottomed oven-safe pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, and cook for an additional 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Add the Pork and Sauces:
- Add the marinated pork, discarding the marinade, to the pot. Stir well to combine with the aromatics.
- Pour in the beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Season and Simmer:
- Stir in the five-spice powder, salt, and pepper. If using, add the sliced water chestnuts and shiitake mushrooms.
- Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven. Braise the pork for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the pork is tender and the sauce is reduced and sticky.
Finish and Serve:
- Check the seasoning and adjust with additional salt or pepper if needed. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
- Serve the Clay Pot Braised Pork with steamed rice or noodles, allowing the rich sauce to soak into the grains.
- Enjoy your Clay Pot Braised Pork with a hint of black tea flavor, perfect for a hearty winter meal or a family gathering. The tender pork and flavorful sauce create a satisfying and delicious dish that's sure to be a hit.
